Every morning, it feels like my entire household has to get ready and leave around the same time. The dogs need to be walked, fed, and belly’s rubbed, while my two teenage daughters need to shower, eat breakfast, and gather school books in time to catch the seven a.m. school bus. In all of this kerfuffle, I need to put on my own makeup so that I look acceptable and polished. It’s not an exaggeration to say that I only have about five minutes to achieve this lofty goal! Because my work is making-up people for photo shoots and television shows, not looking like a lunatic takes on special importance. No one wants a woman who looks like a disaster making him or her up to look, well, not like a disaster.
How do you do an acceptable and even fabulous five-minute makeup? As I studied the products next to my sink, I realized that it’s not so much what products I used, as how I used them. That being said, I include product ideas and links throughout this article in case you need to buy a new concealer, lipstick, or even skin care. I also discuss simple tricks to make your makeup look like you’re a pro, even if you don’t feel that way.
It’s All About Skin Care
Being able to apply foundation and have your skin look translucent and healthy all starts with taking care of your face. The best foundation cannot make up for dull and lifeless skin, no matter how much it costs or what the advertising says. I use Truth Treatments, a skin care line created by Ben Fuchs, cosmetic chemist, nutritionist, and compounding pharmacist based in Denver, Colorado. (For 10% off use the code HAVETHETRUTHSB). In each product, there is a maximum of nine ingredients, and they are all active. In other words, most skin care lines contain over fifty ingredients, with only around ten percent being active, or useful to our skin. For example, a face cream might make your skin feel good, but does it actually heal or promote anti-aging? It’s important to read the list of ingredients on everything from skin care to food items, and in most cases the fewer ingredients listed, the better. Also, each month I receive a microdermabrasion facial that has taken about a years worth of aging off my face.
Foundation and Concealer
On the whole, because I take care of my skin, I only use foundation maybe twice a week, but I use concealer every day. In the video, I demonstrate a quick application of both items, that doesn’t look like I rushed but hides discoloration and enhances my eyes and cheekbones. For foundation in this video, I used MAC Face and Body, because it is lightweight and blends easily while lasting all day. My concealer is Cover FX, and I use a very small quantity only where I have discoloration. In general, I feel that full coverage foundation and concealer can bring out wrinkles and should therefore be avoided in place of more sheer coverage.
COLOR, COLOR, COLOR!
Every morning I chose between a rosy and a peachy blush depending on what I’m wearing and what shade of lipstick I’m using. A general rule of thumb is to match your lipstick to your blush, and there are always exceptions to this. If I want to use a fuchsia lipstick, I go for a pink blush, and the same for peachy lipsticks. For bronzer, I use a color about a shade darker than my face, and I also plop a bit under my chin since things seem to be drooping a little in that area. For both blush and bronzer, I run my brush over my eye to add a touch of color.
QUICK EYE SHADOW IN A FLASH
In order to create a stunning fast eye-makeup look, I go for a bronze shade in the crease and over my entire eye area. In the video, I use The RealHer eye shadow palette, as it has some beautiful warm shades that stay on all day. After I apply shadow, I use waterproof eyeliner from MAC called Espresso, and I place it in the waterline and on my top lash area. This draws attention to my eyes, but takes only a minute and looks great. Then, taking my slanted brush, I put a matching eyebrow color to fill in my brows, and use the same color to run it along my top lash line, over the eye pencil. Lastly, I apply Maybelline Great Lash, my go-to mascara that I’ve been using for the last thirty years. It’s inexpensive and it works!
