This week on The Beauty Shaman, I review a new makeup subscription product line called Deck of Scarlet. Their platform is that every two months you recieve a new makeup palette consisting of a blush, highlighter, three eye shadows, two lipsticks, and a liner in the mail, and every other month you pay $29.95. Each palette is designed by a specific YouTube makeup artist and is primarily promoted on YouTube where you can watch tutorials on how to use the color options. This particular palette was created by Nikkia Joy (@Nikkiajoy), the wonderful Australian personality and YouTuber. Great idea, right? Mind you, you can cancel at anytime (unlike Comcast), have free shipping, it’s 100% cruelty free, and with the code GRAY you can get 10% off your subscription. In this video, I conduct the review from the question, is the product good enough quality to warrant your subscription?
The Look
The look and design of the packaging is beautiful. It arrives in a black box, with Deck of Scarlet clearly branded on the front. As you open it, you remove the palette which is held in the sleeve pictured here. If you’re anything like me, getting not only makeup, but stylish packaging in the mail makes my skirts fly up. If you get this as a gift for someone, they will be impressed by it’s glamor and elegance.
The Palette
The palette contains two lipsticks and the first is Venus, a plumish-raspberry full coverage creamy color, and the other, Astro, is a medium taupe with a hint of grey. In this tutorial, I show how to use the plum color to best effect, and next week I’ll teach you how to use the taupe. The eye shadows are usable and wearable colors like Aurora, a gold shimmery color, Space, an opaque grey, and Gravity, a charcoal grey with a little silver shimmer for pop. The blush is Stellar, a warm burgundy, and the highlighter is Stardust, a beautiful color for any skin color. All of the colors are of a cool tone except for Aurora, which adds warmth to the brow bone and lid. After sampling the products, I was pleased to find that they applied and blended well, and lasted the whole day. Because I work as professional makeup artist in television, how well a product holds up is of the greatest importance!
The Liquid Eye Liner
The liquid liner is Galaxy, a charcoal grey liner with a fine tip for easy application. Liner, especially liquid liner, can be tricky to apply as we get older. How do you get the liner close enough to the lashline so that it looks natural and pretty? As we get into our forty’s and up, liquid liner can easily look harsh and too heavy. In this video, I show some simple and easy tricks to soften the line by brushing eye shadow on top of it. From my perspective, this is a great liner that didn’t flake off my skin, get into my eye, or run down my face as the day progressed.
I feel that Deck of Scarlet is a quality product with beautiful packaging that any woman with a penchant for makeup arriving in her mailbox will love. The cost is $29.95 every other month and, to give some perspective, you’ll spend $28 for a Nars lipstick at the store, and in this palette you’ll receive eight items for only a little more!
