Do Cleanse Diets Work on Older Women
Do you ever feel discouraged about how the older you get, the harder it can seem to not only lose weight, but eat healthy? To top it off, many of us are experiencing hormonal changes and lifestyle shifts that alter what may have previously worked for us. How can a busy woman champion self-care without adding to the work load she already experiences? In to answer these and other pressing questions, I talked with Julie Pelaez, co-writer with Jo Schaalman of The Conscious Cleanse: Lose weight, heal your body and transform your life in 14 days.
What Does Consciousness have to do with Eating?
We are all creatures of habit, and that includes unhealthy eating and drinking patterns that don’t serve our highest good! Life can feel like a never-ending treadmill of crisis, demands, responsibilities, and commitments that leaves little space and time for self-care. One of the things I love about doing cleanses, is that it forces me into being deliberate with what I’m putting into my body. It also brings into sharp focus how much better I feel when I eat nourishing and nutrient rich foods that fuel my body and mind. A cleanse takes a focused effort to be conscious with what you eat because you have to shop, prepare, and cook on a whole different level. In my experience, when I do this my mind is clearer, I sleep better, and I tune into my body speaking to me about what it really wants. In short, consciousness has to do with how you think, move, and exist in the world, which includes what you put into your body.
BUT I’LL HAVE TO GO OFF OF CAFFEINE AND SUGAR AND I’LL DIE
If you’ve thought this, you are normal! In fact, the first time I went on a cleanse this was my pervading worry. At that point in my life I was struggling with panic attacks, anxiety, and insomnia, and was also drinking about eight cups of coffee a day! I knew that once I went off caffeine, I was going to feel terrible-and I did. I felt terrible for about three days, and then the headaches disappeared and I began to feel like I hadn’t felt in years: energetic and motivated. I also realized that I couldn’t eat dairy products or gluten, and that my extra weight came from my body not being able to metabolize these foods. After fourteen days on the cleanse, I dropped a dress size (about ten pounds), my insomnia disappeared, and my anxiety and panic was greatly diminished. Ever since then, I use cleanses about once or twice a year to keep me on track and in tune with my body’s needs. As I age and my responsibility’s have increased to running a business, helping teenagers get into college, and maintaining a house, my health and sense of wellbeing becomes of even greater importance.
What About Hormones?
In the interview, Julie and I go into great detail about the foods and drinks that can help individuals alter how they eat and respond to cravings as they launch into The Conscious Cleanse. Both the online platform and book are packed with information, recipes, and encouragement for women as they delve into changing their diet. One of the wonderful benefits of doing the cleanse, is the remarkable way it balances hormones. Think about it: you get going in the morning by drinking coffee, then after lunch you might need a pick-me-up of another coffee, or maybe hit the office candy bowl, then at night you have a glass of wine to wind down. You are on a roller coaster of up and down from the minute you get up until you sleep. Getting off this ride is a powerful message to your body that all is well, that it can relax and balance out. Even the extra weight you gain through menopause can be diminished by this simple method to balance hormones.
Eat More Vegetables, Feel Better
If you know you don’t eat enough vegetables, now is the time to learn how to prepare them with the panache of an experienced cook. No longer will you run to filler foods like empty carbohydrates and processed foods as your body cries for nutrients! My encouragement is to try The Conscious Cleanse, join the community on their website, and experience a transformation of health and wellbeing. You won’t miss that cup of coffee, wine, or cookie, and you will begin to love vegetables, fruits, and deep sleep that this type of life change brings.
