Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as the old saying goes. This is a truth that is hard to disagree with because there are many different forms of beauty. It’s unlikely that your lovely grandmother is going to be asked to model for Victoria’s Secret anytime soon, but that doesn’t mean her brilliant white and curly hair, beaming smile, warm presence and lovely attitude is any less beautiful, nor does it make her any less dignified.
On the flip side, sometimes the most “perfectly spun” people, those who may have all the right features in all the right places, may be beautiful, but not necessarily magnetic and affable. Better yet, pure beauty cannot be beauty without at least one imperfection. That’s why often celebrating your insecurities and even being proud of them can be healthy because without them we’re not as real and vibrant as we could be. Who wants to be perfect, after all? That would be very boring.
So, a question remains – is beauty simpler than we think? It’s worth asking those questions, especially if we’re feeling less confident than usual. With that in mind, consider some of the following:
Simple Self-Care Is Often Best
The real truth is that you don’t need an elaborate 10-step skincare routine to feel like you’re taking care of yourself, at least unless you want to. It’s true that a mask or serum now and then can be fun, but don’t ever think that simple, consistent habits that help your actual needs as opposed to what other people are doing online is inferior. Simple self-care, if you keep up with it, can work wonders over the years.
The best simple self-care steps are often those that keep us grounded. It’s also fine if you find comfort in the familiar, in knowing that every day you’ve done just a little bit to look after yourself such as had that morning lie-in, or went for that evening walk after dinner. Beauty is about caring for yourself first and foremost, because what is beauty if not a pleasant outlook on the world and gratitude for being here?
Health Is Beauty
Following on from our prior point, you’ll often find that being your healthiest self is often tied to beauty. So for example, fixing your posture with gentle core exercises can help you seem alert and attentive, as opposed to slouched and tired.
Moreover, undergoing regular inspections with a dental practice or having a massage now and then to work out the knots in your shoulders can be rejuvenating, with the former being necessary and the latter being optional, but a nice luxury to have.
Nourishing your hair with minerals and vitamins can be better than dying it constantly to fit a certain aesthetic. You get to decide what beauty means to you and how you follow it of course, but you could do much worse than investing in your own health.
You Go Through Several “Beauty Stages” In Life
It’s easy to view beauty as something you do and then complete, as if it’s a final push like finally dieting to your target weight. But the truth is that beauty is like a fire you nurture and not a cup you fill.
Put simply, you get to decide what beauty means to you today. Maybe you have a huge, busy day and that means simply enjoying skincare and not wearing makeup, because you’re not exactly going to a show to impress people, you’re just trying to be practical.
It can also mean wearing your best glam while on a date, or enjoying a restaurant visit with your partner, or even volunteering to model your friend’s popup fashion brand. Moreover, the beauty you enjoy when you’re 21 will likely shift by the time you’re 40, and then on as per our example about dignified women in their golden years. If you feel tired of beauty, perhaps you just need to shift your approach to the tastes of the now.
Bonus: Beauty Is A Fun Hobby & Can Help You Connect To Others
Without disparaging the beauty discipline in any way, it’s nice to know that it’s never really that serious. Have fun with it! Enjoy beauty as an art form, one you can invest in and enjoy at your own pace.
Let it connect you to others. Let it help you feel good about yourself and explore how you like to express your personality. There are no tests to pass, and anyone who judges you for having fun isn’t worth knowing anyway.
With this mindset, we hope you can avoid over-complicating beauty or making you think it’s a standard you absolutely have to meet. Without you and your interests, beauty is nothing.
