Madison Reed Hair Color Product Review: Does it cover gray hair?

If you are over the age of forty you’ve either started coloring your hair or are considering it. At this point, I am about forty percent gray and color my roots every three weeks, as my hair grows on average a half an inch a month. Because of this, it’s cost effective for me, and I’m sure for you as well, to do it yourself. That being said, there are many hair color company’s available to you, and it’s hard to chose what will work best! This week on The Beauty Shaman, I conducted a tutorial on the Madison Reed hair color, and also addressed it’s claims to use safer ingredients in replacement of ammonia another naughty and potentially harmful ingredients. In respect to the claims, does it work?

Hair Color without Ammonia

Madison Reed doesn’t use ammonia, resorcinol, PPD, and parabens. For those of you who suffer from allergies with any of those ingredients, you have found your hair color! When you watch the video, you’ll see that the product covers even my stubborn grays with ease, and that without those bad-boy chemicals. That being said, coloring your hair is a chemical process so if you withdraw the above chemicals, you must replace them with other chemicals. There is no such thing as a chemical free permanent hair color! What does Madison Reed put in their product instead of those listed above? Madison Reed uses ethanolamine (or acetamide MEA), 4-chlororesorcinal, P-aminophenol, and 2-amino-3-hydroxypyridine. These ingredients are safe when used under certain percentages, and have been deemed safe even by the fussy European Union scientists. They also put in some good bits for your hair like argan oil (of which I’m a big fan), panax ginseng, and vitamin C. The best bet is to color a small section of hair to see if you have a reaction before going for it and coloring your whole head.

What’s the Verdict?

After coloring my hair with Madison Reed I didn’t have a reaction to the chemicals, my gray’s are gone, and I have a rich, perfectly matched shade to show off! Another huge selling point for the line, is specific and personalized service. In order to find your perfect color, you take a short test on their website, and also send in a picture of your roots so that they can determine your shade. To me, this is huge. Having turned my hair nearly every color imaginable, finding the right shade on the first try is worthy of a celebration with chocolate cake! Not to mention the fact that I usually mix three different hair shades to get the one that Madison Reed created in one bottle. Pretty cool. A couple other important points about Madison Reed, is that it arrived in the mail when they said it would, has an easy application process, and an above-average shampoo and conditioner to help maintain your hair color.
