Let’s start with a common scenario. You are coming home from work and have to feed the kids, change your clothes, touch up your makeup, and get out the door for an evening event in record-breaking time. How do you manage a five-minute day-to-evening adjustment to your makeup in the midst of chaos? In this video, I walk you through some strategies for a simple and stylish way to upgrade your look in a hurry.
Start with Lipstick
When I want to go from day to evening, I usually start with changing or enhancing my lipstick shade. One of the reasons for this, is that it helps me decide how much darker I want to go with my eye makeup. For example, if I apply a red lipstick, as in the above video, I will use warm tones in my eye makeup, and I won’t go too heavy on the rest of my makeup. It’s a good rule of thumb to pick one facial feature to enhance. If it’s lips then go softer on the eyes, and vise-versa. If I had decided on a soft pinky lip color, then I would’ve boosted my eyes more, and added a rosy blush to go with the look.
Liquid Eyeliner for Older Women
In the video, I used liquid eyeliner from Deck of Scarlet that has a wonderful small tip and easy application. I prefer a narrow tip in order to get the product right next to your eye line. If you don’t like to use liquid, try a pencil liner and also consider using a waterproof pencil if you find eyeliner running a little as the day progresses. LIPBAR makes terrific waterproof pencil eyeliners that I use on all my female Gaia yoga video talent. It doesn’t run during filming, and also works well in the tight line. As a reminder, the tight line is the ledge just under your lashes on the top part of each eye. On the liner above the lashes, I recommend applying a powder shadow with a slanted brush to create a softer look for the liner. On older women, the key idea is to soften your makeup, as opposed to having solid lines and edges.
Crease Color in Moderation
Depending on how much space you have for a crease color, apply a shade that is one to two shades darker than your skin in the crease area. Keep the color toward the outer edge of your eye because if you go to far toward the inner eye, you will close up your eyes rather than making them pop. If you want, you can place a pretty glittery color on your eyelid to add a bit of glamour. I didn’t do that in the video, maybe because I live in Boulder, Colorado where glamour means wearing mascara. I was just in Los Angeles, where it seemed everyone wore glittery shadow! In any case, have fun and be your glamorous, glittery, beautiful self.
