What Are My Fav Summertime Makeup Tips?
With summertime temperatures reaching into the 90’s it’s important to not only take care of your skin with proper moisturizer and SPF protection, but also to know how to wear makeup so it doesn’t end up around your ankles. That being said, here are my top 5 summertime makeup beauty pointers.
Foundation
When it comes to high temperatures and makeup, the rule of thumb is “less is more.” Go for a sheer coverage like MAC Face and Body. (To purchase click here) No matter what your skin type, use a skin primer like Makeup Forever Skin Equalizer. (Click here)It keeps your makeup on while giving your skin a lovely glow. Keep in mind, that if you want to wear a heavier coverage foundation, it will probably end up trickling down your face in a slow drizzle. On the other hand, mineral powder foundations that might work in cooler temperatures will subsequently bring out every line in mature skin under warmer conditions so I don’t recommend them. In addition, use foundation only where you need it, like in your T-zone. This makes reapplying your sunscreen all the easier. A word on sunscreen and foundations: For proper protection, you need approximately ½ teaspoon of sunscreen. Most foundations contain between 15 and 35 SPF, yet the quantity of product you use on your face doesn’t come close to the necessary amount to protect your skin from harmful rays. Even if you’re using SPF 50 separate from your foundation, you’ll still need to reapply it every two hours! Plus, using SPF 15 in your primer and SPF 20 in your foundation DOES NOT equal SPF 35 coverage for your face. Reapplying sunscreen every two hours is fantastic–said no one ever–but it’s either that, or a skin-damaging sunburn on your face. Personally, I use Image Skincare Prevention in SPF 50 separate from my foundation and have had excellent results.(Click here) Lastly, apply your moisturizer, sunscreen, primer, and then foundation in that order.
Waterproof as Much as Possible
By this I mean try waterproof mascara (I like Maybelline Great Lash: click here), cream eye shadow (i.e., Bobbi Brown Long Wear Cream Shadow Stick: click here), and cream blushers (i.e., Benefit Benetint: click here, which can act as blush or lip stain.) For color choices, go with the easy feel of summer by choosing light peaches, pinks, and cherry red. A no sweat trick to keep your eye shadow on longer is to place a little setting powder on top of it. If you need it, a great sheer setting powder that also absorbs oil is MAC Blot Powder. (Click here) I swear by it. Feel like creating some snazzy cat-eyes? Consider waterproof eye-liners (like Urban Decay Longwear Liquid Eyeliner: click here).
Bronzer
If you are like me and have been religiously using your sunscreen, then your face is about two shades lighter than your body. Rather than look like a vampire, I highly recommend using bronzer without mica in it. No suntan has ever come with glitter, no matter how much you wish it would. My personal favorite is Benefit Hoola Matte Bronzer (click here). Just use the included brush and dust it lightly on the highpoints of the face where the sun would normally hit on your cheekbones, brow bones, top of your forehead, and chin. Voila, you are a bronzed goddess.
Lip Stain
Oh, how we love lip-gloss, but in hot temperatures, it becomes a hot gooey mess. Try YSL Glossy Stain (click here) for long-wear lip-gloss at its finest. I used mine until the bottle begged for mercy. For a more affordable version, try Wet and Wild MegaLast Lipcolor. (click here)
Setting Mist
After you apply your makeup in the morning, spritz a little setting mist to help it last throughout the day. Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water (click here) can act as both a primer before makeup and a setting spray after makeup. It also can help your skin stay hydrated and supple all through those summer concerts that go late into the night.
